Here’s a big picture of “The White Rose City.” York is more important to the history of the United States than out-of-towners might realize. Visitors will notice there are some businesses that call themselves First Capital, such as, First Capital Federal Credit Union. This is because York has some claim as one of the four first capitals of the U. S. You see York served as the temporary capital during the drafting of the Articles of Confederation. (That’s a valid reason.) Today, the town is a center for body-building and houses the Weightlifting Hall of Fame. And, the town makes a further national impact. One company makes animal crackers for major retailers and another roasts coffee beans for Starbucks, one of four such facilities in the world. So, York was important in the formation of our country’s union and is still important for retailing all across the country.

Now, for the smaller, more everyday picture. York and its neighboring city, Lancaster, “The Red Rose City,” compete each year in football through their War of the Roses All-Star Game, played by high-school seniors. (That’s charming.) The Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center is a major venue for all types of arts performances. (There’s that word, Capitol, again. Methinks the altered spelling hides nothing.) Street Rods in June heighten the early-summer excitement. And, baseball seems in York to reign supreme among sports, All-Star Game notwithstanding.
