York Pennsylvania Events
York has a lot to offer this Halloween, from haunted houses to Halloween parades and Halloween parties. York has a tradition that has lasted for over 70 years, year after year, and 2019 is no exception.
In 1861, days after the firing of Fort Sumter, wounded Union soldiers were housed in a makeshift hospital set up in the old Penn Commons on the new fairground. The Minister of War made the hospital a permanent facility in 1862, but the mass was closed in 1865 and the halls and grounds were filled with the wounded of Antietam in the good season. It was known that troops passing through York were camped out in the grounds of the Commons and shared the grounds with this mass. Records do not tell us much about the history of the fair, except that it is celebrated every year at Halloween.
In 2018, it was decided to move the date of the fair from the end of July to the beginning of August, and the parade will take place on October 31, the same day as the York County Fair. Get up early to get a good vantage point so you don't miss the best moments of the York Halloween Parade. You will also have access to the five venues in Abbottstown, Lewisberry, Fayettesville and Mechanicsburg.
There is also a ticket to the Museum of Agriculture and Industry, and we will do so later in the day. The tour also takes visitors to the replica York County Courthouse, which served as the venue for the Continental Congress from September 1777 to June 1778. Although demolished in 1860, the original courthouse, which was located in the middle of a town square, has been restored in a modern form so that visitors can learn more about the important events in York during the Revolutionary War.
The two floors of the museum display exhibits covering the thriving industries of agriculture and industry in York County, and exhibits cover the history of the district, its historic sites and museums, including the Pennsylvania State Museum, the Museum of Agriculture and Industry, and the New York State Historical Society. Check out our guide to how to spend your weekend in Gettysburg and look back for more information about this weekend's events.
